Building Your Social and Professional Network

Here are some tools that will better enable you to expand both your social and professional networks.  These tools, if used, can be a great resource to you as an educator!  This page is divided into two sections: links to the tools, and a section to share your contact information for these tools.  Of course all of these are optional.

Social/Professional Networking Tools:

Delicious - (formerly del.icio.us, pronounced "delicious") is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. (Wikipedia)

Ning (Classroom 2.0) - is an online platform for users to create their own social websites and social networks.  Classroom 2.0 is a particularly Ning.

Twitter - is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. (Wikipedia)

Second Life - is a 3D, virtual world that is great for collaboration.  Read Wikipedia's article to learn more.  Pender County Schools has a virtual island in Second Life devoted to resource sharing and professional development.  If you have Second Life installed, you can visit it now.  You can also follow the development of our island and learn about upcoming events there by visiting our PCS Second Life blog.

Skype - is software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and to free-of-charge numbers are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. (Wikipedia)
